ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

I began to learn about serious photography when I lived in Singapore in the 1950s and joined the Singapore Camera Club. The predominantly Chinese members were adept at producing brilliant chiaroscuro prints: they taught me darkroom work. My family emigrated to Western Australia in 1961, and soon after we settled here I was elected to the Council of the National Trust, of which I later became chairman. My interest in architectural photography developed then, combining a long-standing interest in modern architecture with a new-found interest in the heritage of the built environment. I have since done a lot of work recording heritage buildings in Western Australia.

I was fortunate that I was able to travel extensively from my home in Perth, Western Australia, to places which interested me in Europe, Asia and the USA. For example some of my visits to France concentrated on Le Corbusier sites and, in the USA, I visited most major Frank Lloyd Wright sites. My interest in Islamic architecture took me to sites in Spain, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and India. My choice of subjects is personal rather than comprehensive.

I hope you enjoy my photographs and, perhaps, find them useful. Do email me with your comments.
