Great Zimbabwe ruins

There's not much surviving indigenous heritage architecture in sub-Saharan Africa. Some of the oldest and largest structures are in the Great Zimbabwe complex. Its name was adopted by the Republic of Zimbabwe after independence was achieved. The royal complex was built progressively between the 11C and 14C AD. The walls of the Great Enclosure are made of dressed stone laid without mortar, and are over 32 ft high.
